Mississippi Power set an all-time winter peak demand on its system Friday
Between 7 a.m.-8 a.m., customer usage hit 2,525 megawatts, nearly a 10 percent increase from the previous record high of 2,311 megawatts set last January.
Peak demand is the instant when customers require the greatest amount of electricity in any one-hour period in winter and summer.
Spokesman Kurt Brautigam said Mississippi Power and other electric utilities in the Southeastern United States traditionally see higher peaks in the summer than the winter, but the record high nearly matches the company's summer peak of 2,592 megawatts set in August 2000.
