Clock ticking

The window for qualifying to seek elective office in Lauderdale and area counties this year is still open, but the days are going quickly. The deadline is 5 p.m. on March 1, which leaves only 31 more work days in which candidates can qualify.
Already, some of your friends and neighbors have taken the plunge. Enough candidates, many of them political newcomers, have qualified to run in three open offices in Lauderdale County District 1 Supervisor, County Attorney, and Coroner that competitive races are assured. And most incumbents are facing opposition, too.
It's easy to complain and criticize the actions of local government. Anyone who thinks they have a better way should consider putting their own names on the line.
Just know that the clock for 2003 is ticking.
