Horner leads Lady Eagles to win

Monique Horner scored 36 points for Meridian Community College as the Lady Eagles battled for an 81-70 win over Southern Union on Tuesday night.
After trailing at halftime, MCC came out in the second half and went on a run to take control of the game in the first five minutes. The Lady Eagles then held on for the win.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first three minutes of the ballgame, but Southern Union responded with a three-pointer from Courtney Shields to keep the score close. The teams traded baskets for much of the second half.
MCC finally got a run going and outscored the Lady Bison 9-2 to take an eight-point lead with 9:20 left in the first half. Southern Union responded with a 7-0 run. A basket from Mary Neal and Davenda Beard and then another three by Shields cut the lead back down to one.
The Lady Eagles moved the lead up to four points and held the lead for most of the first half. The Lady Bison came roaring back with less than two minutes remaining. Southern Union went on a 6-0 to take a 45-43 lead at halftime.
MCC came out on a roll in the second half. The Lady Eagles took the lead back at 49-47 with 18:28 left in the game on a bucket by JaWanda Huggins.
That's when Horner went off. She hit two field goals to move the MCC lead to 53-49. Then she hit a long three-pointer with 15:35 left. The next trip down the floor she hit an even longer three. The shot from the time-line extended the Lady Eagle lead to 59-49 with 14:58 remaining.
Meridian's defense put pressure on the Lady Bison and MCC extended to as many as 13 points in the second half.
Southern Union came back to cut the lead to seven points, but Horner and the Lady Eagles didn't let the Lady Bison get any closer. Horner hit both ends of a one-and-one and then hit a shot with 2:05 left to make the score 75-63.
MCC was able to run a lot of time off the clock and a basket by Stephanie Mosley with 40 seconds sealed the victory. Horner hit four more free throws in the final 20 seconds and the Lady Eagles went on for the 81-70 victory.
Chelse' Alford added in 17 points for the Lady Eagles in the victory. Southern Union was led by 13 points from Beard. Shields added 11 while Neal had 10 in the loss.
The Lady Eagles improve to 3-1 on the year with the victory and will host the Rush Classic on Friday and Saturday.
