DEKALB  A former West Lauderdale High School football stand-out died Monday morning in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 16.
Tyler Herrington of Collinsville was driving a sport utility vehicle west when it collided with an eastbound 18-wheeler, said Detective Michael Oliver of the DeKalb Police Department. Oliver said Roger Agent, 45, of Philadelphia was driving the truck.
Agent was hauling wood chips, Oliver said.
The accident happened about 6:30 a.m. east of the junction of Highway 39 and near the Depot Hill area, Oliver said. He said Kemper County Coroner Kathy Lanier pronounced Herrington dead at the scene.
The accident is under investigation.
Herrington, a native of Collinsville, worked with his father this past summer at Yates Building Supply here.
Herrington was a 2002 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He lettered in baseball and football, and was an All-District defensive back for the Knights his senior year.
Football coach Stan McCain said this morning he had a close relationship with Herrington.
McCain said the situation is tough on the other football players.
The coach said the team is planning a memorial.
