Lawmakers return for special session

By Staff
July 28, 2002
Meanwhile, in state politics, Gov. Ronnie Musgrove has called state legislators back to Jackson on Tuesday for another special session, this time to consider an economic development project in Laurel, the state Medicaid program and private prison funding.
But what about civil justice reform and medical malpractice insurance? Although Musgrove said earlier this year he would call a special session on those issues, we've yet to see one.
That's too bad because Mississippi's problems are growing more serious each day especially the inability of some doctors to obtain malpractice insurance because their insurance companies are worried about excessively high jury awards.
We urge the governor to act quickly on the civil justice reform and medical malpractice issues, possibly adding them to this week's special session agenda. We also encourage lawmakers to consider and enact changes as soon as possible.
