Pearl Pirates take team gold medal

The clanging of weights could be heard all day at the Frank Cochran Center on Saturday.
Many competitors came to compete in the powerlifting event. The event consisted of squat, bench and deadlift.
The medals were given out to individuals in groups separated by age as well as weight. Also, people could compete on teams to try to win the team competition.
Pirate Powerlifting from Pearl took the gold in the team results. The team had a total of 76 points to take first. Peak Fitness came in second with a total of 47 points and Pop's Team took third with 37 total points.
In the 275-pound weight division, Walker Thames, John Micka, Torey McKenzie and Jim Battenfield all took the gold in their respective age groups. Jack Readman and Justin Mardis took the silver in each of their age groups.
In the 220-pound division, James Young and Kenneth Thompson took the gold medals.
Randell Greene, Ollie Burkes, Jeremy Cockrell, Mike Battenfield and Jeff Douglas took the gold in their age groups in the 242-pound division. Cody Cameron took the silver in his age group.
Jim Lyons and Anthony Collins took gold in the 165-pound division while Richard Griffin got a silver. Brandon Goza won the 181-pound division gold medal.
Brenden Smith and Bentley Carter each won a gold medal in the 198-pound division. Bo Hall and Kevin Jones took gold in the 148-pound division while Patrick Elmore and Chucky Gunnell won silver.
Joe Morrow won the gold in the 132-pound division. Jay Barlow took silver. Seth Lee, Loyd Herford and Henry Jackson each won gold in the 123-pound division while Justin Guy won silver in his age group.
Knute Douglas won the gold in the 114-pound division.
The men weren't the only people lifting weights on Saturday. The females also lifted well.
Elizabeth Dickerson won gold in the 97-pound female division while Roxann Lindsey won the 123-pound division. Rebecca Phelps won the 148-pound division while Tami Stokman won first in the bench for the 165-pound division.
Many other talented competitors competed in only one certain lift and won gold.
Douglas lifted a total of 1,790 pounds in the event while Micka was second with 1,605 pounds lifted. Cockrell lifted a total of 1,325 pounds.
Whigham is optimistic about the success of the event in future State Games.
