Winter season coming to end

By By Mike Carson / bowling columnist
April 23, 2002
It's hard to believe, but the close of the 2001-2002 Fall/Winter season is drawing to a close. Most leagues will be holding roll-offs the first two weekends of May, depending on how holidays affected your schedule. Some leagues, such as Dixie Belles, Saturday Juniors and Wednesday Fun Time Juniors have already concluded league play for the season. I hope your season has been a good one. For those of you who will not be bowling over the summer, I will look forward to seeing you again in August.
Summer league schedules are now available at Dixie Bowl. Be sure to look it over and sign up for the leagues you are interested in. New to the schedule this year is the Baseball League, which will be an Adult-Jr. bowling on Monday night and Wednesday night. Each night will be a separate league and the participants in each league have the opportunity to receive a bowling ball featuring the logo of your favorite baseball team. A sample is on display at the counter. It promises to be a new and exciting league, so parents and kids get together and join us for a summer of fun.
Also coming this summer is the 1st Annual Bowling Camp which will run July 22-26. Open to both adults and youth, participants will be coached by some of this areas top bowlers. I will have more on this in the future. In the meantime, contact Betty Dorough at Dixie Bowl for more information or to register.
After a couple of down weeks, local scores exploded. Once again last week Robert Brown was the "top dog", taking both the high game and high series for the week with a 280/752 effort in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. Leon Fike, Ryan Relinski and Curtis Rutledge all turned in 279s and Don Waldron punched out a 278. Fourteen bowlers recorded 700 Series including Leon Fike, Ryan Relinski (2), Mike Cothern, Don Waldron, Chuck Gray, Johnnie Blackmon, Barry Woods, Bill Fike, Bob Timms, Curtis Rutledge, Randy Rives, Robert Brown and M.A. Copeland.
The ladies were led by Shirley Gaines who took the high series with a 627. Nita Fike captured the high game with a 234. Other ladies shining last week included Janie Tisdale 230/624), Eunice Dillard (224), Sheila Dearman (223), Mary Copeland (222) and Pat James (220). Congratulations to Jean Murphy who recorded her first career 200 game with a 212 in the Dixie Belles.
