MCC grabs spot in tennis nationals

No coach could be any prouder of their team, than Meridian Community College Tennis coach Wanda McPhail. The Lady Eagles guaranteed second year head coach a spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship, to be held in College Station,Texas later in the season.
McPhail is more than excited that her team will be advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament, however she knows her Lady Eagles have one more day to claim the Region 23 title.
Meridian is currently in second place behind Copiah-Lincoln Community College, but the Lady Eagles still have a chance to take over the Region 23 Championship Sunday morning.
In No. 1 singles semi-finals, Co-Lin's Lindesy Phillips defeated ICC's Brittney Scott 4-6, 7-5, 2-1 (retired); Meridian's Charlotte Heidelberg defeated Britney Peek Whitaker of Jones 6-3, 7-6.
In No. 2 singles semi-finals, Co-Lin's Hollie Adams defeated Ashley Manuel of Hinds 6-0, 6-2; while Megan Chivas of Meridian defeated ICC's Caitlin McClarty 6-0, 6-4.
In No. 3 singles semi-finals, Co-Lin's Bethany Barr defeated MCC's Amanda Carden 6-0, 6-2; while Pearl River's Leslie Miller defeated ICC's Cecil Crane 6-1, 6-1.
In No. 4 singles semi-finals, Co-Lin's Jessica Phillips defeated ICC's Marlena White 6-1, 6-0; in other action MCC's Anna Bailey beat Hinds' Cassie Powell 6-3, 6-3.
In No. 5 singles semi-finals, ICC's Nikki Crane defeated East Central's Nikki Tullos 6-2, 6-2; while Co-Lin's Kim McBride contained PRCC's Amy Alton 6-1, 6-0.
In No. 6 singles semi-finals, Co-Lin's Ashley Matthews beat ICC's Kristen Cother 6-1, 6-1; while MCC's Jill Hathrone drilled PRCC's Ashley Ponder 7-6, 6-1.
In No. 1 Doubles semi-finals action, Co-Lin's Adams and Lindsey Phillips defeated ICC 1-6, 6-4, 6-2; while MCC's Heidelberg and Chivas bested Jones 6-3, 6-1.
In No. 2 Doubles semi-finals, MCC's Carden and Bailey outlasted PRCC's Miller and Newton 6-3, 6-7, 7-5; while Co-Lin defeated Hinds 6-2, 6-2.
In No. 3 Doubles semi-finals, Co-Lin defeated Jones 6-2, 6-0; while ICC's Nikki Crane and Cother defeated MCC's Casie Joyner and Hathrone.
The Region 23 Championship sponsor by the Rush Sports Medicine Team will conclude today at the Northeast Tennis Complex. The Finals are slated to begin at 9:30 am.
