Union wins Clinton tourney pool
The Union Lady Jackets went 4-0 to win their pool in the Clinton Invitational fast-pitch softball tournament Saturday.
Union opened with a 2-1 win over Kosciusko as Lauren White's double drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as time had expired. Marley Smith (7-3) got the win. Loren Kennedy had two singles for Union.
The Lady Jackets held off Lawrence County to take a 4-3 win, throwing out the tieing run at the plate in the bottom of the fifth. White had a single and a double with Kennedy adding a pair of singles. Lindsey Cassel (4-3) got the win with Smith picking up a save.
Union whipped Clinton's JV team 8-1 with Kennedy and LaSaundra Harrison both having two singles. Harrison had three RBIs. Smith (8-3) got the win with 5 1/3 innings of relief.
In the pool finals, Union padded a 2-1 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth in beating the Vicksburg Missy Gators 5-1. Cassel (5-3) tossed a one-hitter to get the win. White had a two-run double and finished with three RBIs. Smith added a pair of singles.
Union improved to 15-7 with the four wins after starting the season 1-6.

Newton County 2-2 at Clinton
The seventh-ranked Newton County Lady Cougars went 2-2 in the Clinton Invitational fast-pitch softball tournament Saturday. Newton County enters this week with a 21-4 record and can record the program's 100th all-time victory with a doubleheader sweep of Morton today at Decatur.
At Clinton, the Lady Cougars lost their opener to Grenada 4-3. Dominique Mapp had a pair of doubles, Betsy Clark had three singles, and Suzanne Chaney had two singles. Krissi Harris (5-2) took the loss.
The Lady Cougars bounced back to beat Horn Lake 9-1. Kristin Chaney and Joy Cavenaugh both had two singles with Suzanne Chaney adding a double. Suzanne Chaney (4-0) got the win.
The Lady Cougars knocked off No. 5 Madison Central 4-1 in their third game. Jennifer Smith had a triple, while Kristin Chaney had two singles. Cavenaugh (7-0) tossed a four-hitter to get the win. Katherine Sinele struck out 12 in a losing effort for Madison Central.
The Lady Cougars lost their final game 7-1 to No. 9 Clinton. Lauren Barrett's fifth-inning was Newton County's only hit. Harris (5-3) got the loss.
