Juco star to enter NBA draft
MEMPHIS (AP) Junior college star Qyntel Woods says he will forgo playing at the University of Memphis and make himself available for the NBA draft in June.
It's for my family,'' the Memphis native told The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Sunday's editions. I have to cash in while I'm a hot commodity.''
Woods has yet to make his decision official with the NBA, but he said he will fax the necessary paperwork soon.
At 6-foot-9, Woods has drawn comparisons to Orlando Magic all-star Tracy McGrady.
Woods, 20, averaged 32 points and 10 rebounds per game for Northeast Mississippi Junior College this season. NBA scouts flocked to Booneville, Miss., to watch Woods, and some projections have him rated a top-three pick.
The 2002 NBA Draft is in New York City on June 26.
    Dixie, Seward Co. NJCAA champions
Dixie (Utah) and Seward County (Kan.) are the men's and women's NJCAA Division I basketball champions, respectively, for 2002.
The Dixie Rebels trailed Coffeyville (Kan.) 64-49 with 9:27 remaining before rallying for an 82-81 victory in the men's national tournament at Hutchinson, Kan., Saturday night.
Jaime Lloreda, who was named tournament MVP, led the comeback with 11 of his game-high 26 points coming in the final nine minutes.
Dixie improved to 34-4, while Coffeyville fell to 36-2.
In the women's national tournament at Salina, Kan., a Kansas team claimed the national title for the second year in a row. Seward County capped a 38-0 season by beating previously-unbeaten Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College 87-80 in Saturday night's title game.
NEO, 35-1, led by 10 points early in the second half before Seward's Saints rallied for the win. Seward shot 47 free throws, making 37.
