Lady Trojans fall in semis

The Northeast Lauderdale Lady Trojans will have to wait until today to find out if they make the Class 4A Girls State Tournament next week.
Northeast dropped a 53-42 decision to host Poplarville. in the 4A South State semifinals on Friday, setting up a 2 p.m. showdown with Bay High School today. The advances to Jackson for the State Tournament, the losers' season comes to an end.
Northeast Lauderdale led 22-20 at the half, but Poplarville took a 37-33 lead after three quarters of play.
Quin Jackson led Northeast with 23 points, while Keisha Sanders and Shaquita Bell scored six each.
Union boys 62
Puckett 55
The Yellowjackets earned their first trip to the state tournament in three decades with a seven-point win at Puckett in the Class 1A South State Tournament.
Union, 20-11, got 22 points from Prentiss Evans, 17 from Douglas Wansley, and 10 from Quincy Larkin.
East Marion 54
Newton girls 49
The Newton girls will need a consolation game victory today in the Class 2A South State Tournament at East Marion if they are to earn their first trip to state since the 1998 Lady Tigers were the 2A state runner-up.
Newton, 26-6, got 17 points from Lenora Gray and 13 from Tonya Jordan.
