Excellence in education

Chris Davis of Bessemer, Ala., and Brandon Laird of Biloxi are the Robert E. Lewis Sr. scholars at Meridian Community College for the new school year.
The $500 golf scholarships are sponsored through The MCC Foundation by Robert E. Lewis Jr. of Ridgeland and friends as a memorial to Lewis' father. The late Robert E. Lewis Sr. was an avid golfer in Meridian.
Davis is a sophomore majoring in history. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an honorary scholastic and service fraternity.
Laird is a sophomore majoring in education.
Kara Etheridge, valedictorian of Southeast High School, is a recipient of the 2001-2002 Ruth Van Dyke Nelson Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
The $1,000 scholarship is funded through The MCC Foundation by an endowment set up by Art Nelson Jr. as a memorial to his wife.
Etheridge is a freshman majoring in pharmacy.
Jeremy Scarbrough of Decatur is the recipient of the 2001-2002 W.H. Entrekin Family Music Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
The $900 award is funded through The MCC Foundation by an endowment established by Entrekin.
Scarbrough is a graduate of Northeast High School. He is majoring in vocal performance at MCC and hopes to complete his bachelor's degree in music at Florida State University.
DECATUR Joe Johnson of Suqualena has been named biology instructor at East Central Community College.
Johnson has 17 years of teaching experience. Prior to joining the ECCC faculty, Johnson taught biology at Meridian High School, Northwest Junior High School, Jeff Davis Academy and Lamar High School.
Johnson, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, has a master's degree in science education from Mississippi State University and a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Southern Mississippi.
DECATUR Tammy Jones of Newton has been named the Learning Skills Center assistant at East Central Community College.
The new ECCC staff member is responsible for providing students with tutorial assistance. Her full-time position is funded by VISTA through AmeriCorps.
Jones is a graduate of Sebastopol High School and East Central Community College.
BOONEVILLE Jason Gardner of Meridian is a member of Northeast Mississippi Community College's country music performing group, Campus Country.
The group's first performance of the school year will be Saturday as part of the school's 53rd annual Homecoming celebration. "Campus Country Showtime" begins at 7 p.m. in the college's Seth Pounds Auditorium.
