Turnovers key Winston past Lamar

LOUISVILLE The homestanding Winston Academy Patriots scored its last 13 points of the game on turnovers on the way to a 20-6 win over Lamar School in a hard-fought football game on Friday night.
It began raining in the second quarter and turned into a down pour in the third quarter, something that Lamar head coach Mac Barnes said did not help is team's chances.
Winston led 13-6 at the half, but Lamar moved it to the 34-yard line of WA to open the second half. Winston held on down and that was the Raiders only real offensive threat of the second half.
Lamar found itself deep in its own territory on its second possession of the second half, which came late in the third quarter. Moffett his wide receiver Daniel Harrison for a 37-yard gain on second-and-25 from Lamar's 10-yard line, but the ball was stripped loose and WA recovered the ball at the Raiders' 47-yard line.
Nine plays later Scott Peterson scored on an 8-yard run. Jay McMillan's kick made it 20-6 with 10:07 to play.
After Lamar had two solid possessions to open the game, Winston got on the scoreboard first on an 18-yard pass from McMillan to Caleb Metts with 11:52 left in the half. McMillan's kick made it 7-0.
The big play in the drive was a 43-yard run by Lenny Boatner, who finished the night with 96 rushing yards on 16 carries.
But the Raiders, now 2-4 on the season, came right back.
Moffett broke loose for a 70-yard run to set up his own one-yard quarterback sneak with 9:16 left in the half. The extra point attempt was wide left, leaving the score at 7-6.
Two minutes later Lamar hurt itself with a fumble at its own 16-yard line.
Jason Fulcher scored for Winston on the next play to make it 13-6. A mishandled snap foiled the extra point attempt with 6:52 left in the half.
The non-division win pushes WA's record to 5-1 on the season. The Patriots are going for their fifth consecutive MPSA State Championship. The last two have come in Class AA with the first two being in Class A.
Moffett led the Raiders with 74 rushing yards on 19 attempts, while hitting on seven-of-12 passes for 68 yards. Lane Rush picked up 47 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
Lamar travels to Gallman next week to take on Copiah Academy in a key MPSA 3-AAA contest.
