Even before the smoke had cleared in New York and Washington, Meridian and Lauderdale County residents were doing what they do best: offering to help.
A plea went out nationwide for fresh blood supplies to help overwhelmed medical personnel cope with the injuries wrought by the terrorist acts at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Local people responded immediately, as they do after every tragedy no matter where, no matter when, no matter who is in need.
Usually it's some weather-related phenomenon. This time it was a calamity of man's own making.
Meridian has a well-deserved reputation for a giving, charitable spirit and local folks really shine when others are in need. It's a wonderfully human characteristic, reassuring at a time when our very core values are being assaulted.
