Newton County runs division mark to 15-0

Newton County's fast-pitch softball team is now within one victory of completing a clean sweep through the Division 5, Class 3A/2A/1A race.
The Lady Cougars blanked Noxapater 19-0 and 18-0 Thursday afternoon, running their record to 28-2 overall and 15-0 in division play.
In the opener, Suzanne Chaney and Lauren Barrett combined on a no-hitter with six strikeouts. Chaney went the first two innings to improve to 8-1.
At the plate, Dominique Mapp had a pair of three-run homers and was 2-for-2 with six RBIs, while Krissi Harris was 2-for-2 with a grand slam homer and seven RBIs.
Betsy Clark added a 2-for-3 performance and April Bufkin had a double for Newton County.
Rachel Edwards was the loser for Noxapater, which committed five errors.
In the nightcap, Newton County broke things open with nine runs in the third inning and got a three-run homer from Kristal Burton.
Mapp was 2-for-2 with a triple and four RBIs and Harris was 2-for-2. Bufkin was 2-for-3 and Jennifer Smith had a triple and two RBIs.
Chaney (9-1) again got the win on the hill, throwing three scoreless innings before again giving way to Barrett, who fanned four in two innings.
Ashley Cremeen was the loser for Noxapater, which got a 2-for-2 performance from Susan Patridge.
Newton County returns to action today, when the Lady Cougars complete the regular season with a split doubleheader. NCHS is at Enterprise at 1 p.m., then hosts Clinton at 6 p.m.
Sylva-Bay Academy 5, Newton County Academy 4: Katye Tubb's two-run triple in the top of the sixth tied the game at 4-4 and Cassie White's single plated Tubb with the winning run in the Academy 3-A slow-pitch contest at Decatur.
Newton County Academy turned four two-out errors and a single from Candi Chesney into four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Lady Saints got two runs back in the top of the second.
Sylva-Bay outhit NCA eight to six. Tubb had a single and a triple for the Lady Saints, while White added a pair of singles.
Kristin Rice had a pair of singles for NCA and turned a pair of double plays.
Sylva-Bay improved to 7-5, while NCA fell to 3-5.
