Durant advances for Lake rematch

JACKSON Freshman Monchel Howard scored 29 points to lead Durant to a 71-60 victory over Ethel in the MHSAA Class 1A State Tournament Thursday at the Mississippi Coliseum.
Ashley Howard scored 15 points and LeGreta Branch had 13 for Durant (25-8).
Melissa Winters led Ethel with 18 points. Lakendra Barksdale had 17 points and LaToya Winters 10 for the Lady Tigers (32-7).
Ethel led 21-18 after the first quarter, but Durant took over from there. Durant led 37-30 at the half.
Durant moves on to play Lake in the semifinals Wednesday after the Lady Hornets topped the Lady Tigers in last week's South State semifinals.
Durant has appeared in the past two 1A finals, winning a state title in 1999 and losing to Scott Central last season.
Class 1A Boys
Dexter 88, Biggersville 76: Nic Mark had 26 points and eight blocked shots to lead Dexter to an 88-76 victory over Biggersville in the MHSAA boys Class 1A State Tournament Thursday.
Ken Haynes added 22 points for Dexter (22-12). Robin Gamble had 16, Tory Crumedy 11 and Omar Magee 10 for the Bulldogs.
Roger Davis led Biggersville (26-7) with 22 points. Lionel Gaines had 14 and Jacobi Barton 11.
The game was close for the first three quarters with Dexter holding a 31-26 lead at halftime and 57-51 after three quarters.
Dexter plays Durant in the Class 1A semifinals Wednesday.
Class 4A Boys
Humphreys County 73, South Jones 57: Raphiel Ward scored 32 points to lead Humphreys County to a 73-57 victory over South Jones Thursday in the MHSAA Class 4A Boys State Tournament.
James Fields added 14 points and Orlando Horton had 12 for the Cowboys (27-9).
Rashaune Walters led South Jones with 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Lafayette Nelson had 18 points for the Braves (22-12). Humphreys County led 43-28 at halftime.
Humphreys County advances to Wednesday's 4A semifinals where it will plays Jackson Lanier, which was the state runner-up last season.
Lanier won the 4A North state last weekend.
