breaks state scoring record

By Staff
Jan. 1, 2001
Southeast Lauderdale senior point guard Monique Horner put her name in the record books during the 2000-01 basketball season when she broke the Mississippi girls' high school basketball scoring record on Nov. 17.
Horner needed just five points against cross-county rival Clarkdale in the Lauderdale County Tournament to break the state mark, and she responded with a career-high 64 points.
The previous state record of 3,647 points was held by Tarsha Bethley of Hollandale-Simmons, who later went on to play at the University of Mississippi.
Horner's career night of 64 points gave her a grand total of 3,706. She has since topped the 4,000-point mark, becoming just the seventh high school girls' player in the nation ever to do so.
Horner cracked the record at Meridian Community College's Ivy Sports Center, and MCC officials joined Southeast Lauderdale High School in giving Horner a top-notch celebration.
