Junior Leaders begin team-building activities

RUSSELLVILLE — Fifty-five students representing every high school in Franklin County have started a year of leadership development and community service through the Franklin County Junior Leaders program.

Chamber of commerce Executive Director Cassie Medley said the class has been divided into smaller groups to accommodate students’ schedules.

The first team-building session was held June 16 at Bear Creek Collaborative in Hodges with 12 students participating. Activities included icebreakers, kayaking, high- and low-ropes courses, and archery.

Medley said the activities were designed to teach students how to solve problems, work with a partner or group, communicate effectively, and follow instructions.

She said some students were trying activities such as kayaking, ropes courses and archery for the first time.

Medley said Junior Leaders are expected to complete 50 hours of community service during the year. Students are responsible for finding service opportunities outside the program’s scheduled events. She said participants assist with chamber events and activities throughout the year.

Medley said the program helps students build confidence by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones.It also helps students connect with local business and community leaders.

Medley said Junior Leaders are encouraged to become effective communicators, active listeners and positive influences in the community.

Medley said a grant awarded through Northwest RC&D Council has helped support annual trips to Bear Creek Collaborative for team building, College Day at Northwest Shoals Community College, and Legislative Day in Montgomery.
