9 titles in 10 years for Phil Campbell
The Phil Campbell Bobcats captured the Class 3A Area 14 championship with a decisive win over the Colbert Heights Wildcats Friday night.
The Bobcats (21-11; 5-1) needed only one win going into the series to claim the title but lost game one 9-7 at Colbert Heights on Thursday. Phil Campbell responded with a 7-1 win on Friday to win the championship.
Phil Campbell, after winning its ninth area title in 10 playoff seasons, hosts Geraldine in the first round of the playoffs.
Phil Campbell struggled throughout game one. The Bobcats were outhit 12-6 and committed five fielding areas, many at critical times. The bright spot in game one was the extra base hits. Of Phil Campbell’s six hits, four were doubles by Bentley Morgan, Chandler Benford, Hagen Raper, and Jack Owens.
The Bobcats cleaned up their play and responded with energy on Friday. Freshman Owens dominated the Wildcats on the mound pitching a complete game one-hitter. He struck out nine and walked only three.
The only run scored by Colbert Heights came late in the final inning of play.
Phil Campbell jumped on Colbert Heights early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Bobcats proceeded to score five more unanswered runs to win the game.
Owens and Miles Duboise both had two hit games. Raper scored three times for Phil Campbell and Benford scored twice. Isaac Duboise generated two runs on a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly.
