Young RHS softball team works to build confidence for future
RUSSELLVILLE — A young roster continues to shape the outlook for the softball team at Russellville High School as the program focuses on development and long-term growth.
Head coach Rick Lawson said the team remains one of the younger groups he has coached with no seniors on the roster. Despite its youth, the lineup has the benefit of experience, as the core group that saw most of the playing time last season has returned.
Lawson said the continuity has helped the team gain confidence as players continue to grow together.
“We’re a lot more confident right now than what we were at this point last year,” he said.
Lawson has focused on building momentum that can carry into future seasons. He said the longterm goal is for the team to compete for an area title and continue pushing toward postseason opportunities.
Several players have emerged as key contributors for the Lady Golden Tigers.
Junior outfielder Ticelee Gholston has been one of the team’s most dynamic players. Gholston, an all-state selection last season, provides a versatile presence at the plate as a lefthanded hitter who can bunt, slap or drive the ball for power. Her speed on the basepaths also makes her a constant threat once she reaches base.
In the infield, sophomore shortstop Abrianna McCulloch has been a steady presence both offensively and defensively. Lawson said McCulloch consistently makes strong contact at the plate and uses her speed to pressure opposing defenses.
Power hitting in the middle of the lineup comes from Taitum Bishop and Alexia Groce, who help provide runproducing opportunities for the offense.
D e f e n s i v e l y , Russellville relies on communication and leadership across the field. Gholston serves as one of the team captains and helps organize the outfield. Lawson said her energy and leadership set the tone for the defense.
McCulloch plays a similar role in the infield, helping direct teammates to keep the defense positioned correctly during games.
Behind the plate, catcher Erin Grimes has returned for her second year as a starter. Lawson said she continues to develop while handling the pitching staff and managing the pace of the game.
While the team continues to learn and develop, Lawson said the players have embraced the process and bring a strong work ethic to practices and games.
“They work extremely hard,” Lawson said. “They have a don’t-quit mentality.”
