Red Bay beats Falkville, earns region ticket

The Red Bay Tigers are heading to the Northwest Regional Hanceville after a dominating 71-39 win over Falkville in Class 2A subregion play.

The Tigers were to face Tanner in a Tuesday game.

From the opening tip, it was clear that Red Bay came to play. Jaxson Vinson provided the early fireworks, accounting for 12 of the team’s 20 firstquarter points. His hot hand forced Falkville into a defensive scramble it never truly recovered from.

While the Blue Devils managed 13 points in the opening frame, their offense stalled in the second period. Red Bay’s defense locked down, holding Falkville to just five points while the Tigers’ offense shifted into another gear, pouring in 23 points to take a commanding lead into the locker room.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Khalil Luster, who finished with a gamehigh 20 points.

Luster was particularly effective in drawing contact and converting, finishing a stellar 7-for-8 from the freethrow line. Vinson finished the night with 18 points, while Bryant Harris also reached double digits with 11. The Tigers’ depth was on full display as Landyn Lewey (8), Conner Nichols (6), and Karsyn Powell (3) all contributed to the lopsided scoreboard.

Decatur Heritage 53, Belgreen 49: Braycen Johnson led the Bulldogs with 20 points followed by Jake Dill with 14 points.

• Mars Hill 65, Colbert County 61: Beau Hargett’s 18 points helped the Panthers (12-15) make a return trip to the Class 3A NorthwestRegional.Sawyer Mosley added 12 points and Brooks Campbell scored 11 for the Panthers, who held off the Indians in the closing minutes. Coyrian Campbell led Colbert County (16-12) with 18 points. Kevin King added 15 points. Mars Hill plays the winner of Vinemont/Winfield game at the Northwest Regional on Wednesday.

• Meek 57, Waterloo 31: The Tigers (18-8) mauled the Cougars (13-15) in a Class 1A subregional. Meek will make its fourth regional semifinal appearance in five seasons Tuesday at Hanceville. Waterloo last reached a regional in 2002.

Other Subregion Girls results

• Wilson 40, Haleyville 38: Wilson is headed to its first regional tournament. Cam Tillman’s block on Cydney Yeager’s drive with 8.8 seconds to play sealed Wilson’s 40-38 win over Haleyville in a subregional Friday, securing a berth in the Class 4A Northwest Regional.

The Warriors (22-8) play West Morgan, which beat Dora in double overtime, on Wednesday at Wallace State-Hanceville.

This is Wilson’s furthest venture into postseason play since finishing as the 4 A state runner-up in 1990. The Warriors won the 4A title in 1989.

Avery Darby led Wilson on Friday with nine points. Olivia Poarch and Tillman added six points each. Kenna Turner’s 11 points led Haleyville (18-14), which made 11 3-pointers. Naveah Henderson finished with 10.

• Deshler 79, Fayette County 32: Reece Davis posted 31 points and five assists for the Tigers (283) in their subregional matchup. Kacie Nelson finished with 23 points and six steals. Miyah Allen added six steals.

• Bob Jones 71, Florence 49: Elise McClain scored 25 points and Alyssa Robinson added 15 to help Bob Jones capture the Class 7A, Area 8 title. Journee Hawkins led the Falcons (17-15) with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Trinity McCroskey added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Both teams advance to next week’s Northwest Regional. Florence will play Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

• Mars Hill 86, Colbert County 47: Belle Hill scored 42 points to lead Mars Hill (26-4) to the Class 3A Northwest Regional. Mia Humphries added 19 points and Molly Wright 14. Mackenzlee Johnson paced the Indians (14-12) with 16 points, while Caitlin Cunningham chipped in 15 and Ashlyn Davis 11.

• Decatur Heritage 41, Covenant Christian 35:

Saydee Coan’s 15 points led the Eagles (5-24) in a Class 2A subregional. Lauren Thomson had nine points and Raya Byrd eight.

• Meek 69, Waterloo 41: The Cougars were within six points in the third quarter before Meek pulled away in a Class 1A subregional. Addison Willard led Meek with 18 points and Zoe Hearn scored 17. Mabry Ford paced Waterloo (19-12) with 12 points. Clara Lambert added 11.

• Cold Springs 71, Red Bay 17: Katlyn Linley had five points for Red Bay (6-19) in a Class 2A subregional.

• Clay-Chalkville 57, Muscle Shoals 54: Kimora Brewster sank two free throws with 8 seconds remaining and the Cougars (23-2) survived a last-second threat by the Trojans (9-14) in a Class 6A subregional. Clay-Chalkville will make its third regional appearance in four years Thursday in Hanceville. Muscle Shoals will miss the regional for a second straight season.
