UNA officials mum on hiring efforts

FLORENCE — University of North Alabama officials have declined to answer requests about the procedures to be followed to hire a new band director.

A posting for the job appears on the university’s employment page on its website.

The TimesDaily last week sent Executive Director of Media and Public Relations Michelle Eubanks the following list of questions about the procedures for hiring a new director:

• Who is the interim director?

• What characteristics will be prioritized when considering a new director?

• What is the hiring process?

• How many applicants has the university had for the role thus far?

Eubanks declined to provide answers to the questions, responding only that “the university has no additional information to share beyond what has been posted publicly.”

The TimesDaily also reached out to President Kenneth Kitts via email to pose the same questions and asked him if any additional comments could be provided.

Senior Executive Assistant to the President for Administration Regina B. Sherrill replied to the email, stating all inquiries should be directed to Eubanks, copying her on the response.

UNA band alumnus Drew White on Tuesday said during his 15 years with the band, he was often involved in the hiring process within the Music Department.

“Generally, a hiring committee is formed, and candidates are first vetted through [Human Resources], then through the committee. The committee will make its recommendation to higher ups before a job is offered,” he said.

Per the job posting, applications will be accepted until the role is filled.
