Gold City comes to Roxy on March 13
As president of the Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council, I see firsthand how the historic Roxy Theatre functions as more than a performance space. It serves as a gathering place, a community resource, and a living part of downtown Russellville.
That’s why the Gold City Quartet’s 45th anniversary tour, coming to Russellville on March 13 matters to me as more than just a concert date. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an evening of gospel music with friends and neighbors while also helping support the ongoing upkeep of the Roxy. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on March 13 and the show begins at 6:30 p.m.
Gold City has been performing gospel music for more than 40 years. This Dove Award-winning quartet from Gadsden quickly achieved success soon after forming in 1980.
At its heart, the quartet’s mission has always remained the same: To use the musical gifts the Lord has given them to honor God, share the gospel message, witness to the lost and encourage the saved.
That mission continues to shape the music they perform today.
Gold City has received 65 Singing News Fan Awards, including the 1993 Dove Award for Song of the Year for “There Rose a Lamb.”
The group has also earned 10 No. 1 songs and more than 60 top 10 songs, as calculated by Singing News Magazine.
In 2017, the Gospel Music Association inducted Gold City into its Hall of Fame. That legacy continues through the voices and leadership of the quartet’s members today.
At the helm of Gold City is Danny Riley. His baritone voice, emcee ability and leadership form the foundation of the quartet, which carries on the legacy established by his father, Hall of Fame bass vocalist Tim Riley. Riley’s hometown is Boaz.
Alongside him is Josh Feemster, also from Boaz, who brings a powerful lead vocal and strong stage presence to the group.
The quartet also features Chris Jenkins, whose tenor voice draws wide respect across the gospel music community. Jenkins’ hometown is Greensboro, North Carolina.
Jeff Chapman completes the quartet after studying with the late Tim Riley. He adds the finishing touches to the group’s sound. Chapman’s hometown is Brunswick, Georgia.
What began as a quartet assembled to make great music for the glory of God has remained just that. Even with success and recognition, the mission and message remain central to what the group does. Gold City continues to focus on making standard-setting gospel music grounded in faith and service. The evening will also feature an opening performance by the ReSound Quartet. Based in Red Bay, the Southern gospel group has been singing together for several years. They have performed at the Ark Encounter, Loretta Lynn’s Gospel Fest and other venues.
Each weekend, they travel to churches and events to share gospel music and faith-based messages with their audiences.
Local resident Sheila Woods said she has attended both Gold City concerts and ReSound’s gospel shows. Woods said she enjoyed both groups’ performances.
“We are so blessed to have the historic Roxy Theatre available for these outstanding gospel groups to perform in Russellville. Shows like this help keep the Roxy’s doors open for future generations,” Woods said.
