Vina wins tourney
The Vina Lady Red Devils captured the Vina Veterans Day Tournament championship with a 47–35 victory over the Oakman Wildcats, improving their season record to 4–1. Earlier in the tournament, Vina secured wins over Sumiton Christian 45-31 and Tharptown 26-25.
The Lady Red Devils were led by Layla Hester in the championship game with 25 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals. Cecilia Rowbottom recorded a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Braxton Quinn contributed 4 points, 6 steals, and 5 assists, while Miranda King added a threepointer. Olivia Crum and Harleigh Ridge rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.
In the Sumiton game, Hester had 16 points, followed by Rowbottom and Crum with 6 each. Miley Pannell and Quinn had 5 each, and Samantha Elders and King had 3 each.
In the tough win over a talented young Tharptown team, Quinn led scoring with 9, followed by Hester with 8, King with 6, and Marissa Lamar with 3 for a one-point victory.
Phil Campbell
Phil Campbell dominated Tharptown in the season opener 46-8. The Bobcats led the Wildcats 20-5 at halftime and 36-5 at the end of the third quarter.
Leela Baker led the Bobcats with 17 points. Baker also scored her 1,000 career point early in the game. Addie Gilbert added 11 points.
Phil Campbell overcame a sluggish first half to run away from the Cherokee Indians in the second half to win 46-26. The Bobcats found themselves in a tight game early, leading Cherokee 8-6 at the end of the first quarter and tied at the half 17-17.
The Bobcats outscored the Indians 14-3 in the third quarter to take a 31-20 lead before putting the game away in the fourth quarter.
Leela Baker led all scorers with 16 points followed by Gilbert with nine points, Layla Baker with seven points, and Bailey Jewell with seven points.
The Bobcats couldn’t hold onto a lead in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Winston County Yellow Jackets 49-43.
After trailing 26-17 at halftime, Phil Campbell outscored Winston County 20-7 in the third quarter to take a 37-33 lead. The Yellow Jackets took over in the fourth quarter outscoring the Bobcats 16-6 to get the win.
Leela Baker led the Bobcats with 15 points followed by Layla Baker with 10 points.
