Russellville softball team gets first season win

Russellville’s softball team went on the road and got its first win of the season with a 12-2 victory over the Haleyville Lions on March 10.

The Lady Golden Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning and went on to score four runs in the third, one in the fourth and six more in the final frame of the five-inning contest.

Haleyville scored one run in the bottom of the first and another in the third.

RHS outhit the Lady Lions 13-6. Ticelee Gholston led the way by going 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Gholston also scored four runs. Alexia Groce, Blevyn Sappington and Kaylee Suggs added two hits each, while Bri McCulloch, Khristyan Huerta, Sadie Odom and Chloe James also added one hit apiece.

McCulloch had three RBI, and Odom added two while Huerta and Sappington drove in one run each. Gholston had a triple. Additional extrabase hits came in the form of doubles by James and Huerta.

The Russellville squad had eight stolen bases.

Suggs pitched all five innings to get the win. She struck out nine batters and allowed six hits.

Russellville hosted Florence High School March 11 and the Lady Falcons got a 17-3 win. Florence outhit RHS 14-6, and the Lady Tigers committed nine errors during the five-inning game.

RHS (1-12) scored single runs in innings two, three and four.

Sappington had two hits, including a double. Gholston also doubled while Taitum Bishop and McCulloch tripled. Groce added a single and RBIS came from McCulloch, Huerta and James.

Russellville’s runs were scored by Gholston, Bishop and Sappington.

Suggs got the start in the pitching circle and went 1.1 innings. She was followed in relief by Jonalyn Thorn.

Up next for the Lady Golden Tigers will be area games versus Lawrence County and West Point.
