OPINION: My Thoughts

He Says

This was the first real weekend without football since the first of August, I think. And, no, I don’t count the Pro Bowl. That’s not real football. Super Bowl Sunday is upon us. I bet security in New Orleans will be unlike any the French Quarter has seen in some time …

The first of two major airline accidents happened last week in Washington, D.C. I don’t know how it happened but the tragedy over the Potomac was totally avoidable. A Black Hawk military helicopter collided with a commercial airline as it was about to land at Reagan National Airport. The incident left no survivors. The second accident occurred in Philadelphia when a medical flight crashed like a missile into the ground leaving debris scattered over several city blocks …

Flying is still the safest form of travel. I love to fly, and I will continue to fly. There is no better form of transportation for long distance travel. However, I can only imagine what those families are going through. So many times, I’ve flown into New York or D.C., and I’m staring out the window as we get ready to land, looking for all the landmarks. I’m putting up my book or taking out my ear pods, or texting a loved one that we are about to land. So were all those souls who were expecting to land in the nation’s capital. God rest their souls …

The favorites to be area champions, in my opinion, are Russellville and Red Bay boys and Belgreen girls …

Senate confirmation hearings are funny. It’s all theater. It’s all for the cameras. One side (in this case, the Republicans) asks questions that allow the nominee to say what he or she needs to say. The other side (in this case, the Democrats) rarely gives the nominee a chance to talk so they can drone on and on and on about things they know very little about to make political points. Then they will ask a long convoluted loaded question and expect just a “yes” or “no” answer from the nominee. Kash Patel (FBI), Robert F. Kennedy (Health and Human Services) and Tulsi Gabbard (National Security) were mains up this week …

Spring fever: The weather warmed up nicely over the weekend and will be nice all week. Golfing weather. I believe we still have some bitterly cold air ahead of us. Just in time for baseball and softball season …

Northwest Shoals Community College announced it would restart a men’s and women’s golf program next year. This is great news for young golfers in the area who will get a chance to continue their education and play golf at the collegiate level. Northwest now has, or will have, the following sports to offer — baseball, softball, volleyball, cross country and golf …

I attended a Hans Zimmer concert with my son on Sunday night in Nashville, Tennessee. If you don’t know who Hans Zimmer is, you likely know his music. He has composed the scores to some of the biggest modern movies, such as “Gladiator,” “The Dark Knight,”“TheLionKing,” and “Interstellar”… Have a great first week of February!
