Cross country runners compete at state

Several local runners qualified for the state cross country meet.

In the boys division, In Class 2A, Tharptown’s Angel Garcia finished fifth with a time of 17:42.

In the girls division, in Class 3A, Phil Campbell seventh grader Avery Wells finished fifth with a personal record time of 22:59. In Class 2A, Belgreen’s Briseyda Luna finished sixth with a time of 22:27. Runners from Franklin County competed in the AHSAA State Cross Country Championships, held at the Oakville Indian Mounds Cross Country Course recently.

In the boys Class 1A-2A meet, Tharptown’s Angel Garcia had the best finish among local runners, finishing 11th in the 3.2mile race with a time of 17:44. Tharptown finished twelfth out of 16 teams with an average time of 19:57.

In the boys Class 5A meet, Russellville finished 11th out of 16 teams with an average time of 18:20. The Golden Tigers top runner was sophomore German Perez. Perez finished in 33rd place with a time of 17:15.

In the Class 1A-2A girls race, the top finisher from Franklin County was Belgreen junior Briseyda Luna. Luna finished in eighth place with a time of 21:21.

RUSSELLVILLE

Russellville’s girls finished seventh out of 13 teams in Class 5A with a time of 23:11. The Golden Tigers top runner was senior Esbeidy Jiminez, who finished in 33rd place with a time of 21:52. Phil Campbell seventh grader Avery Wells finished in 45th place in the Class 3A race with a time of 23:59.

For Russellville, both the boys and girls teams qualified for 5A State. Each team finished third at 5A Section 4 meet. RHS had two medal recipients. Esbeidy Jimenez finished 15th with a time of 21:56 and Connor Evans finished 14th with a time of 17:38. At state, the girls finished seventh out of 13 teams in 5A, and the boys finished eleventh out of 16 teams in 5A.
