Belgreen baseball team advances to second round

The Belgreen Bulldogs (13-12) beat Victory Christian in two out of three games in the first-round playoff of the Class 1A baseball playoffs to advance to the second round. The Bulldogs won the opening game of the series 4-2, but fell in game two 10-6 on Friday. The Bulldogs came back Saturday to beat Victory Christian 7-4 to take the series.

Belgreen will host the defending Class 1A state champions Appalachin (21-2) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will be on Saturday at 1p.m.

The game set the tone of the series, going into extra innings. Will King pitched a gem for the Bulldogs, going eight and one-third innings, giving up five hits, two runs and striking out seven.

The game was scoreless through five and a half innings before Victory Christian got on the board first in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 1-0 lead.

Belgreen responded in the top of the seventh to tie the game when Landon Cox scored a bunt by Alex Guidry.

The game went into extra innings with both teams tied, 1-1.

Belgreen broke the tie in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs. King, Cox and Guidry all scored for the Bulldogs.

Ty Hamilton had two hits for Belgreen.

Belgreen lost game two 10-6.

Victory Christian led 2-1 after one inning, but Belgreen led 4-3 after the second inning. Victory Christian scored seven runs before the Bulldogs got on the board again in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Landon Cox scored two runs in the game. Will King, Alex Guidry, Colton Ashton and Konner Trapp all scored a run each.

In the decisive game three, Belgreen got on the board first after Rush Berryman doubled in a run.  Belgreen added four more runs in the third inning, 5-0.

Victory Christian scored two runs in the fourth and fifth to cut Belgreen’s lead to 5-4.

Belgreen responded with a run in the sixth and seventh to seal the win.

Cox got the win for the Bulldogs on the mound, pitching a complete game.

Trapp had two hits, a RBI and scored twice. Guidry had a hit and scored twice.
