UPDATED: Russellville, Phil Campbell, Red Bay offer warming options during cold spell

Russellville
In Russellville, the police department lobby is open 24 hours a day. Those needing to warm up during this cold spell are invited to stop by.

The Park and Recreation Department will also open the Old Canteen next to the A.W. Todd Centre on Washington Ave. as a warming station starting on Monday morning at 8 a.m. This location will also be available for overnight stay Monday night. The situation will be reevaluated during the day Tuesday as to how long it will remain open. For questions, contact the Russellville Police Department at 256-332-2230.

On Jan. 16, RPD reported the following weather and roadway conditions updates:
– Low temperatures of three degrees expected for Wednesday morning (Jan. 17). This does not factor in the wind chill.
– Wind chill warning until Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. This means dangerously cold wind chills as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero. Heightened risks of hypothermia and frostbite.
– Danger of re-freezing. Portions of well-traveled roads thawed to the asphalt, which doesn’t mean travel conditions for those roadways will be safe now. Soon after the sun sets, those portions will likely turn to black ice and be even more dangerous.
– Pedestrian traffic. A lot of foot traffic has been spotted on the roads. Foot traffic should not block vehicles from any portion of the roadways. If on foot, make sure to stay as far off the roadways and as far away from vehicles as possible.
– Use extreme caution on hills. None of the vehicles in these roadway conditions can stop or maneuver quickly.
– For emergencies, dial 911.
– For non-emergencies, call 256-332-2230.

Phil Campbell
The Phil Campbell Community Center on College Rd. will be open starting tonight (Sunday) from 7 p.m. until Wednesday at 7 p.m. The situation will be reassessed at that time, and a decision will be made to stay open longer if needed.

No pets, and no smoking or vaping. Patrol units will check in. Those who know of anyone that cannot make it to the community center and are in need of blankets are requested to let the Phil Campbell Police Department know. They can be contacted by phone at 205-993-5313.

Red Bay
The City of Red Bay reported road conditions in the City of Red Bay and county roads are extremely dangerous for travel. Road conditions aren’t expected to improve today with a high of 21 degrees and a low in single digits tonight.

Please do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
