Helping Santa toy drive gets underway

The annual Helping Santa toy drive, coordinated by the Russellville Fire Department, in partnership with the Russellville Police Department, is underway.

To apply for assistance through this program, pick up an application at the police department and turn it in there when complete. The deadline for turning in applications is Dec. 8.

Pickup dates for toys will be determined at a later date.

Businesses or groups interested in allowing a toy donation drop-off box can contact RFD’s Lt. Andy DeVaney at 256-810-1637.

“Our community really steps up and helps with this each year,” DeVaney said. “This is for anybody in the city or county who needs help with toys for their kids, including foster kids, or grandkids for Christmas.”

DeVaney said so far the toy drive has been able to fill all the applications turned in each year.

“I’ve helped with this every year since we started doing it,” he added. “Several of us have been involved since the start. We prefer new toys. Some people prefer to donate money. Junior Leaders help us shop for the toys.”

RFD Deputy Chief Randy Seal coordinated the event previously. While DeVaney is at the helm now, Seal said he is still involved.

“Andy’s been helping with it every year, and since I have the position of deputy chief now, with more duties, it was time to let someone else head up the program,” Seal explained. “All the guys at the RFD and RPD love to help with this every year, and it takes an army working together for this outreach to go smoothly and be able to help those who need it.”
