BHS Scholars Bowl secures Class 1A state title for second year

The Belgreen High School senior Scholars Bowl team buzzed its way to the top at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, Ala., April 14, becoming Class 1A state champions for the second year in a row. Last year’s win marked a first for Belgreen in securing the title of Class 1A state Scholars Bowl champions.

“I’m very proud. They did a great job, and they worked really hard this year,” explained team sponsor Mary Motes. “They overcame a lot of obstacles along the way, and I’m very excited about how well they did.”

Three of the five team members were on the team last year – Carlos Garcia, Quentin Durrett and Landen Etherington. Alex Bush and Michael Enriquez are the new members.

In addition to the team performance, the BHS Scholars Bowl also received recognition with Durett placing third in Individual All-Stars, averaging 50 points per game. No stranger to excelling in Scholars Bowl competition, last year, he was named to the Division 2 All-Stars.

Etherington has received individual recognition for his skills as well, having accepted a College Bowl scholarship to Northwest-Shoals Community College in Phil Campbell to continue his Scholars Bowl career.

“This has been an experience none of us will ever forget!” said Etherington. “We appreciate getting the chance to compete at the state tournament two years in a row and becoming back-to-back 1A state champions.”
