Fall sports start for Patriots

The Northwest-Shoals Community College baseball and softball programs are preparing for the 2023 season and the return of sports for the Patriots.

Fall practice and games are taking place during September and October, with baseball head coach David Langston and softball head coach Angel Brown getting their squads ready for the regular season when it counts the most – which set to begin spring 2023.

The baseball team has 32 players on its roster. Included in the group are seven graduates of Russellville High School: Nathan Brockway, Eli Gipson, Emitt Green, Ethan Oliver, Samuel Pace, Nick Smith and Grayson Thorpe.

Langston was a two-time state championship-winning assistant with the Golden Tigers.

Smith graduated from RHS in 2021 and is reunited with his former Russellville teammates, who all graduated in 2022.

On the softball field, the Patriots are working hard under Brown to get ready for the upcoming 2023 regular season. Representing Franklin County on the Patriots’ roster are Madison Vandiver, Jade Roberson and Taylor Cameron. Vandiver played for Belgreen; Roberson played for Phil Campbell; and Cameron played for Tharptown.

The Patriots will be competing in the Alabama Community College Conference, which is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

In the coming week, the baseball team will play Sept. 28 in the AUM Capital City Classic at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. 24. The softball team will play Bethel University and Bevill State at the Florence Sportsplex at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sept. 24 and UAH/Southern Union State at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at UAH Sept. 30.
