Letter to the Editor: Save Franklin County’s natural wonders

Dear Editor,

Save Franklin County from the dump. Preserve the beauty that God has given us! Ask the Franklin County commissioners to vote no!

Take a look at this map. It can be found at http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/contemporarymaps/alabama/recreation/bearcreek.pdf

Explore Franklin County and its natural wonders.

Dismals Canyon is a sandstone gorge near Phil Campbell. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in May 1974. Dismals Canyon is one of only a few places where rare glowworms – locally called dismalites – can be found.

Belgreen Underground Lake near Belgreen School is a unique place to explore.

Cedar Creek Reservoir has some of the best bass fishing ever. It is known for its extraordinary clean waters.

Bear Creek Floatway is considered one of the best canoe trips in Alabama. You’ll encounter stretches of flat water. Check out the groves of beautiful blooming azaleas, mountain laurel and magnolias before you reach Class I rapids and shoals.

After you enjoy these incredible adventures, I think you will ask the Franklin County commissioners to preserve our beautiful county and its treasures. Say no the dump!

Sincerely,

Paula Hovater
