Belgreen Bulldog Anglers compete at state

The Belgreen High School Anglers competed in the state Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association Classic tournament in the 1A-3A division on Neely Henry Lake June 23-24.

The team tied for seventh with Carbon Hill out of 12 teams and finished No. 12 in their division for the season.

“Being on the fishing team is not like other sports,” explained team sponsor Mimi Wood. “The anglers and boat captains have to have the determination to go out in the cold and the heat and fish hard all day.

“I’m very proud of how they did this year.”

  • Samuel Darracott and Jake Cooper, in boat 123, team 4510, finished No. 66, with four fish caught. The total weight for the tournament was 7.84 pounds. They received 335 points.
  • Jonathan Smith and Alex Bush, in boat 18, team 4509, finished No. 85, with four fish caught. Total weight was 6.28 pounds. They received 316 points.
  • Darin Hayward and Seth Sykes, in boat 146, team 4773, finished No. 112, with three fish caught. Total weight for the tournament was 4.22 pounds. They received 289 points.
  • Miguel Willingham and Brason James, in boat 147, team 4508, finished at No. 148, with one fish caught. Total weight for the tournament was 2.24 pounds.

“The team had a great year,” said boat captain and Franklin County Board of Education member Shannon Oliver. “This was Belgreen’s third year in a row to qualify to compete in the state tournament. I’m very proud of everyone involved in helping give students these types of opportunities to represent our school.”
