Local student-athletes snag big honors in baseball

When it comes to baseball, Franklin County doesn’t disappoint; in fact, it shows out.

Phil Campbell and Russellville raked in some huge statewide honors this week from the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Phil Campbell’s Mason Swinney was selected to the Super All-State team. The Super All-State team is the top 10 baseball players in the state of Alabama, regardless of classification. This was the second consecutive year for the University of Alabama signee to receive this honor.

Swinney now awaits the Major League Baseball draft July 17.

Swinney was also selected as the Class 3A Hitter of the Year and first team All-State.

Phil Campbell junior Cam Habada was selected as the Class 3A Pitcher of the Year and first team All-State. Russellville senior Canyon Pace was selected as the Class 5A Hitter of the Year and first team All-State, and Russellville junior Banks Langston was selected as the Class 5A Pitcher of the Year and first team All-State.

The Russellville Golden Tigers also landed two players on the Class 5A first team All-State: senior Eli Gipson and junior Cason Heaps.

RHS senior Nathan Brockway earned second team All-State honors.
