Big third quarter lifts Belgreen to win

Covenant Christian outscored the Belgreen boys in every quarter but the third – and that was all that mattered, as the Bulldogs beat the Eagles 47-40.

Trailing 23-16 coming out of the locker room at halftime, Will Bonner and the Bulldogs clamped down on Covenant Christian, outscoring the Eagles 21-6. Bonner scored 15 of his game-high 33 points in the third quarter, including dropping three three-pointers and going five-for-five from the freethrow line.

Bonner would be perfect from the charity stripe for the game, going 11-for-11.

Collin Bonner scored all nine of his points in the second half. Adrian Reeves and Canaan Stough chipped in three points and two points, respectively.

Reed Trapp led Covenant Christian with 22 points.

The Belgreen boys improved their record to 16-3 heading into the Franklin County Tournament as the top seed. The Bulldogs will play Thursday night at Vina at 7:30 p.m. against the Vina/Tharptown winner from Tuesday night.

Belgreen 72, Phillips 44

Collin Bonner scored 23 points, including an 11-point second quarter, to lead Belgreen past Phillips.

Belgreen jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter and extended that lead to 34-20 by halftime. The Bulldogs put the game away in the third quarter to take a 54-35 lead.

Austin James and Reeves followed Bonner, scoring 13 points and 10 points respectively. Stough added nine points, Carson Cox five points, Jordan Wright four points, Braycen Johnson three points, Cole King two points, Alex Jarnigan two points and Will King one point.

Belgreen 48, New Hope 45

Will Bonner scored 27 points to lead Belgreen past New Hope 48-45 in the Shoals Christian Tournament Saturday.

New Hope led Belgreen 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bulldogs cut the lead to one at halftime, 24-23.

New Hope maintained a 39-38 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Belgreen claimed the win in the fourth quarter, outscoring New Hope 10-6.

Collin Bonner followed his brother with 13 points. Reeves and James scored three points each. Cole King added two points.

GIRLS

Belgreen 72, Phillips 44

The Bulldogs swept the Phillips Bears in a recent area matchup. The Belgreen varsity girls beat Phillips 50-34.

Dacota Green scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs. Green scored five points in the first quarter, six in the second quarter and eight in the third, including two threepointers.

Belgreen led Phillips 15-2 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 28-11 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs maintained their advantage throughout the second half.

Noelle Willingham followed Green with 13 points, including six in the first quarter. Carson Hovater added eight points. Sydnee West, B.B. Scott and Audree West scored two points each. Isabella Tate and Lilliana Willingham scored one point each.

Belgreen 47, Covenant Christian 45

Green scored 22 points, draining four three-pointers, to lead Belgreen past Covenant in a close one, 47-45. Green scored all nine of the Bulldogs’ points in the second quarter, keeping Belgreen in the game.

Covenant Christian led Belgreen 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and 27-19 at halftime. Belgreen stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 17-6 to take a 36-33 lead. Willingham scored eight of the Bulldogs’ 17 points in the third.

Belgreen hung on in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Willingham followed Green, scoring 11 points. Alayna Tate added eight points, Hovater four points, Isabella Tate two points and Makenna Fisher two points.

Belgreen will play Phil Campbell at Vina Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Franklin County Tournament.
