Belgreen dominates Sheffield on Homecoming night

Dacota Green scored 10 first-quarter points to help the Belgreen Bulldogs power past the Sheffield Bulldogs early, leading to 51-30 homecoming night win Friday.

Belgreen led Sheffield 16-3 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 29-11 at halftime. The Bulldog girls continued to add to their lead, taking a 42-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

Green led Belgreen with 19 points. Carson Hovater followed with 10 points, all coming in the second half. Isabella Tate added eight points, five of which came in the second quarter. Noelle Willingham added six points, B.B. Scott five points and Makenna Fisher three points.

The Belgreen boys followed up a close game at Sheffield with a win at home, 49-24.

Just like the girls, the Belgreen boys opened up a big firstquarter lead. Will Bonner scored 11 of his 13 points in the first quarter to help Belgreen take an 18-4 lead.

More than that, Belgreen locked Sheffield down defensively. In the two teams’ previous meeting, Sheffield scored 29 points in the first half. Belgreen held Sheffield to 12 points in the first half on Homecoming night.

“We had some great defensive energy tonight,” said Belgreen Coach Marty Cooper. “It was a great Homecoming crowd. We jumped on them from the start, and they could never get back in it.

“I’m proud of our guys and the way they came out focused.”

The Bulldog boys extended their lead to 26-9 at the half and led 35-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Collin Bonner led Belgreen with 14 points, followed by Will with 13 points. Austin James added nine points, Adrian Reeves five points, Jordan Wright four points, Canaan Stough two points and Hadden two points.

With the win, Belgreen improves to 5-1.

Maria Estrada was crowned Belgreen’s 2021 Homecoming Queen.
