Belgreen softball counts on star pitcher

Belgreen softball coach Susie Tverberg said she is eager to get her team’s season going after the abrupt shut down this past year. She has a young team but one of the best returning pitchers in the area in Emma Dempsey.

“It seems like forever since we played,” said Tverberg. “We are anxious to get to work and start playing.

“We have a lot to work on,” Tverberg added. “We are focusing on fundamentals and building skills.”

Dempsey, a Northeast Mississippi Community College signee, will be the anchor for Tverberg’s team this year.

“Emma is very consistent,” said Tverberg. “You get the same thing out of her every day. She works at it and has the drive to get better. She is a quiet leader. She’s not vocal; she leads by example.”

Belgreen is young in key positions, especially in the middle of the field, where the Lady Bulldogs lost a lot of experienced players.

Players like junior Morgan Vandiver, sophomores Noelle Willingham, Katie Cooper and Sydney West and eighth-grader Lily Blackburn will be expected to fill the void.

Belgreen is in an area with Hackleburg, Phillips and Vina.
