Franklin County teams advance to regionals

Four Franklin County basketball teams advanced to the Northwest Regional semifinals with wins Saturday.

BELGREEN BOYS AND GIRLS

In Class 1A boys, Belgreen beat Covenant Christian 69-49. The Bulldogs will travel to Tuscaloosa to play Holy Spirit Monday. In Class 1A girls, Belgreen beat Shoals Christian 53-29 and will travel to Guin to play Marion County Monday.

The Belgreen boys overcame a sluggish first half to pull away from the Covenant Christian Eagles 69-49. Belgreen trailed 31-28 at halftime, but the Bulldogs caught fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 27-9 to take over the game.

Scout Bragwell led Belgreen with 22 points, followed by Will Bonner with 18 points and Collin Bonner with 10 points.

The Belgreen girls led 29-22 and pulled away in the second half, outscoring Shoals Christian 24-7. Belgreen held Shoals scoreless in the fourth quarter for the 53-29 win.

Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 27 points. Dacota Green followed with 14 points.

RED BAY BOYS

In Class 2A boys, the Red Bay Tigers easily put away the Winston County Yellow Jackets 61-34.  The Tigers led 39-25 at the half and outscored the Yellow Jackets 22-9 in the second half.

Braden Ray led Red Bay with 16 points.

The Tigers will host Sheffield Monday night.

PHIL CAMPBELL GIRLS

In Class 3A girls, Phil Campbell beat Elkmont 58-36.

The Phil Campbell girls overcame a poor shooting performance in the second quarter to come back and beat Elkmont. Phil Campbell trailed at the half 23-22 thanks in large part to making four of 19 shots in the second quarter. The Bobcats got their bearings straight in the second third quarter and clamped down on Elkmont, outscoring them 14-3 to take a 36-26 lead. The Bobcats continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring Elkmont 22-10 to secure the win.

Katie Thomas led Phil Campbell with 15 points, followed by Caitlynn Mills with 13 points and Olivia Taylor with 11 points.

The Bobcats will travel to Blount County to play Susan Moore Monday.

SEASON ENDS

Russellville’s boys and Vina’s girls both lost Saturday, ending their seasons.
