Belgreen boys close out strong

The past several matchups between the Belgreen Bulldogs and the Red Bay Tigers have been tight games up until the end, with Red Bay coming out on the winning end. The finals of the Franklin County Tournament seem to have spurred a course correction for the Bulldogs.

Belgreen pulled away at the end of that game but last week dominated Red Bay in the two teams’ final matchup of the season. Will Bonner led the charge, scoring 29 points – nine in the first quarter, seven in the second, seven in the third and six in the fourth.

Belgreen led Red Bay 18-11 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 10, 34-24, at halftime.  Belgreen continued the scoring surge in the third quarter, outscoring Red Bay 19-15 to take a 53-39 lead into the fourth quarter. Belgreen left no room for a comeback, either, outscoring the Tigers 20-11 in the fourth quarter.

Following Bonner’s dominating performance was Scout Bragwell with 11 points and Collin Bonner with 10 points. Adrian Reeves hit three three-pointers for nine points. Isac Willingham and Canaan Stough scored four points each. Alex Betts and Austin Jones added three points each.

Lane Shewbart led Red Bay with 13 points, nine of which came in the third quarter. Braden Ray followed with 10 points. Gage Bays added eight points. Jalen Vinson and Landon Glover scored six points each. Hunter Burks had five points, and Carson Corum added two points.

Belgreen 76, Phil Campbell 62

Will and Collin Bonner and Bragwell combined for 66 points in a 76-62 win over the Phil Campbell Bobcats early this past week.

Will Bonner scored 26 and Collin Bonner scored 22 in the win. Bragwell hit six three-pointers to account for all of his 18 points.

Belgreen led Phil Campbell 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. Phil Campbell cut the lead to 36-31 at halftime. The game was still within reach for the Bobcats going into the fourth quarter, with the Bulldogs leading 52-46. Belgreen outscored Phil Campbell 24-16 in the fourth quarter, with Will Bonner scoring 14 of the Bulldogs’ points.

Austin James hit two shots from behind the arch to account for his six points in the game. Willingham and Canaan Stough scored two points each.

Mason Swinney and Bryant Hyde led Phil Campbell, scoring 17 points each. Canaan Clay followed with 14 points. Kyle Pace had seven points, Luke Garrison three points, Quentin Hyde three points and Blain Goodson one point.
