Lady Golden Tigers open volleyball season with Senior Night sweep of East Lawrence

The 2020 Russellville High School volleyball season is underway, and the Lady Golden Tigers picked up a win over East Lawrence in the opening varsity match.

With the coronavirus pandemic still forcing schools to be flexible with scheduling plans, RHS decided to go ahead and have Senior Night Aug. 20 during the season opener. Russellville swept the Lady Eagles by a 3-0 total and won by game scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-6.

This year’s seniors are Sophie Moore and Ashlyn DeArman, and they were both recognized for their contributions to the team and school. Family, friends, teammates and coaches were all on hand to show their support for the senior duo.

“Sophie has played volleyball for five years but is out this year for medical reasons. She is a big part of our team and is such a good leader,” said Russellville head coach Whitney Glover.

Moore is the daughter of Shelana and Shane Moore.

DeArman is the daughter of Cam and Susan DeArman. “Ashlyn didn’t play the past two years but decided to come back out this year,” Glover shared. “She is a very hard worker and will be a big contributor this season.”

During the match versus East Lawrence, Russellville used effort, determination and quickness to defeat the Lady Eagles. Abby Green had six kills, 10 assists and five aces for RHS, and Jayna Poss added eight kills, three aces and three digs to help the cause.

Leah Rushing pitched in with four aces, five assists and five digs, while Natalie Nichols and Anna Beth Oliver also helped lead the way to victory with five assists each.

The 2020 schedule is subject to change, and it features a few road trips to round out the first month of the season. Sept. 3, 5 p.m., is the next planned varsity home match, with RHS hosting Lawrence County in a big Class 5A, Area 15 contest.
