Vina girls win holiday tourney

The Vina Red Devils won the Waterloo Invitational Tournament during the Christmas break, winning three straight games and improving their record to 13-3.

In additional success, sophomore point guard Rayleigh Guin surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in the semifinals.

Vina defeated Woodville, Whitesburg and Waterloo to grab the championship trophy.

The Lady Red Deviles defeated Waterloo in the finals 58-23. They raced out to a 24-5 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Guin led Vina with 16 points and six assists. Kaitlyn King added 13 points, and Sara Scott had 12 points. Vina made five three-pointers in the first half of the game.

The Red Devils defeated Whitesburg Christian in the semifinals 62-44. Again the Red Devils used a strong first quarter to build a good lead, outscoring Whitesburg 20-6. Vina led 38-19 at halftime and 48-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Guin led Vina with 19 points and five assists. She scored her 1,000th point in the third quarter. King added 12 points. Vina hit 10 three-pointers in the game.

In the quarterfinals, Vina defeated Woodville 56-29. The sharpshooting Red Devils hit eight three-pointers.

Guin again led with 17 points and seven assists. King added 12 points on four three-pointers. Kaitlyn Athey had 11 points and hit three three-pointers.

Vina picks up area win

The Vina Red Devils improved to 3-1 in area play and 14-3 overall with an easy 37-17 win over the Brilliant Tigers.

Vina led Brilliant 9-2 at the end of the first quarter and 18-4 at the end of the first half en route to the easy win.

Sara Scott led Vina with seven points and 10 rebounds.
