Quotes impart wisdom to everyday life
One of my favorite responsibilities for the Franklin County Times is choosing the Quote of the Week.
Oh, I love interviewing and writing and page design – those job duties are the reason I chose journalism as a career in the first place. However, although the Quote of the Week is one of the smallest features we offer each Wednesday, it’s definitely one I always look forward to.
I guess it’s possible some readers haven’t even noticed the Quote of the Week, but I hope you will from now on.
My first experience being in charge of a theme quote was in my first full-time job as a staff reporter down in Tallapoosa County for the “Alexander City Outlook.” The Outlook is a six-days-a-week newspaper – that meant six quotes every week. It was definitely a highlight to scour the internet, poring over quotes of all kinds – clever, insightful, silly, thought-provoking – and try to choose which ones to share each day with our readers.
At the Franklin County Times, we added a Quote of the Week when we revamped our Opinion page last year, and choosing what wisdom to spotlight became my responsible once more.
It’s amazing to about all the wisdom that has been boiled down into pithy quotables. Don’t you just envy the people – the writers, the actors, the politicians, the educators, the great thinkers and world leaders of all sorts – who have managed to articulate some great truth so clearly, so succinctly, that you are moved by it in some way?
For a long time, my favorite quote has been this one from Robert Frost: “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” It just seems to encapsulate the overarching truth of – pretty much everything.
It’s difficult to choose a favorite, however, when there are so many good quotes in the world. I’m fortunate that I get to choose a new “favorite” every week to share with all of you.
