JV teams begin basketball season

Last Monday the Tharptown Lady Wildcats traveled to Vina, where the Tharptown eighth grade girls led 6-4 after first stanza. The Lady Red Devils came back in the second to take a 12-11 half-time lead. Seventh grader Rayleigh Guin would score six points in the second and add five more in the third as Vina increased its lead to 19-16.

Sarah Scott, Destiny Miller and Hailey Cantrell would all add two in the fourth as Vina would hold on for a 25-21 win. Guin finish with 13, followed by Cantrell, Miller and Scott, all with four each.

Tuesday East Franklin eighth graders came to Vina, but it would be all Lady Red Devils, Vina scored eight points in each of the four periods for a 32-14 win. Scoring for Vina were Guin with 18, Cantrell with six, Scott with four and Abbie Petree with four points.

On Saturday, Vina played a good Covenant Christian team. Covenant Christian would lead 15-14 at halftime. However, the second half belonged to the Lady Red Devils, who outscored the Eagles 24-5 for a 38 to 20 victory. Guin led Vina with 21, followed by Cantrell with 8, Scott, 5, and Miller, 4.

Vina ninth grade lost a close game to East Franklin 24-21. The teams were tied at nine points each at halftime, and with a good performance by Vina’s Maddie Raper with eight points. East Franklin pulled away in the last 30 seconds. Mikaela Timms had five for Vina, follow by Megan Dill with four. Greta Raper and Kayla Thompson would each chipped in two points each in the loss.

Vina junior players will be in action again Nov. 10 against Marietta, Miss., and Nov. 11 against Paint Rock. Both games are at Vina.
