Red Bay looking for volunteers this weekend

Red Bay officials are looking for volunteers to help plant approximately 17,000 spring bulbs this weekend.

Officials said the bulbs were donated to the city to be planted on the new Corridor V/Alabama 19 exchange, but because of planting schedules, the bulbs need to be planted immediately and the area near the exchange will not be ready until the fall of 2014.

The Red Bay Cemetery Board gave city officials permission to plant the bulbs in the low section of the City of Red Bay Cemetery where they will remain until they can be harvested and replanted next fall.

Red Bay operations director Mike Shewbart will plow furrows in the cemetery on Friday and volunteers are needed starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, to help plant the bulbs. Bulb planting will began at 9:00 a.m. and last for approximately three hours. Bulbs will not have to be placed in the furrows or spaced.  The bulbs will be dropped in the furrows and then the dirt will be pulled back over the bulbs with a tractor attachment.

Volunteers should contact city clerk Linda Holcomb at 256-356-4473 to sign up.
