Michael Sweda, Sr., 88, Russellville, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the VA Hospital in Birmingham.

He proudly served his country in the Army during World War II. He was a decorated veteran and had been injured twice in the line of duty. The medals and awards he received from the Army include Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster Bronze Large, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Bronze star attachment (triple), World War II victory medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Germany Clasp, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st award, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Sharpshooter Badge, Submachine Gun Bar, Marksman Badge, Machine Gun Bar, and Rifle Bar.

The visitation was held on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Spry Memorial Chapel. The funeral followed with full military honors. Speaking at the service will be Pastor Tim Alexander, Kristen Sweda, and Deanna Rumble. Burial will be in the Corinth National Cemetery, Corinth, Miss.

He is survived by his children, Michael Sweda, Jr. and wife, Cynthia, Ron Sweda and wife, Deborah, Carolyn Rumble and husband, David; grandchildren, Michael Talmadge Sweda, Katie Johnson and husband, Adam, Kristen Sweda, Charles Sweda, Lily Bond, Deanna Rumble, Megan DeLeon and husband, Rapheal; and a host of nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Victoria Ann Sweda; four sisters, and three brothers.
