Muscle Shoals sweeps Russellville

J.R. Tidwell/FCT Russellville’s Christopher Owens (23) puts a layup up and in against the Muscle Shoals Trojans Friday night. Owens totaled 6 points.

RUSSELLVILLE — Despite giving rival Muscle Shoals a good game, the Russellville Golden Tigers varsity boys could not overcome the Trojans.

Muscle Shoals picked up a 66-55 win in a game that remained fairly close throughout the 32 minutes of play.

Muscle Shoals would have the lead at the end of every quarter of play, but Russellville was never very far behind.

The Trojans had an 18-14 lead at the end of the first and a 35-26 halftime advantage.

It was Russellville that actually scored the most points in the third quarter, going 12-10 against Muscle Shoals in the eight minutes after intermission.

Unfortunately the Trojans’ built up lead allowed them to stay on top 45-38 going into the fourth.

Muscle Shoals managed to finish the game strong on a 21-17 run, giving them the 11-point victory over its region foe.

Caleb Robison led Russellville in points with 19. Jacob Seal had 11 and Christopher Owens totaled 6.

Also scoring for the Golden Tigers were: Jackson Smith (5), Kaelan Bonds (5), Leslie Dunstan (4), Drew Malone (3) and Joseph Butts (2).

Muscle Shoals Lady Trojans 49, Russellville 25

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers did not fair quite as well as the boys varsity team, though neither game was ever a blowout.

The most remarkable thing about the Lady Trojans’ 24-point victory is how comparatively small a margin they outscored Russellville by for most of the game.

The Lady Golden Tigers failed to score a single point in the first quarter, and Muscle Shoals had a 21-0 lead going into the second.

From that point on, however, Russellville was only outscored 28-25, and the scoring was tied after the first quarter until the Lady Trojans hit a 3-pointer to end the game.
