Outdoor classroom receives funds

The Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) and a group of dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to repair and restore the damage caused to Phil Campbell Elementary School’s Outdoor Classroom by the April 2011 tornadoes.

The funding to do such a restoration was made possible in large part by a $1,533 grant provided by the Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council. These grant funds were used by the Franklin County SWCD to replace the roof on the log cabin which had been blown off, build a flower bed where the other cabin once stood, and countless other landscaping tasks that have made the Outdoor Classroom better than ever.

Roger Hayes, Chairman of the Northwest Alabama RC&D Council, said that providing grants to enhance educational opportunities for young people is one of the most important things RC&D does.

“Phil Campbell School and its community have endured and remained strong through it all, and RC&D is proud to help the community as it continues to rebuild,” Hayes said.
