Couple accused of using drugs in child’s presence

A Russellville couple was arrested on Friday for allegedly smoking marijuana in the same room with their 10-month-old child, officials said.
Nicholas Shane Hill, 23, and Lakesha Sartin, 18, both of 218 Ash Ave., Russellville, were charged with chemical endangerment of a child, second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett said.
According to Hargett, officers with the Lynn Police Department contacted the Russellville Police Department on Friday after visiting the residence where Hill and Sartin lived.
Hargett said the Lynn police officers were investigating a theft that had occurred in their jurisdiction in which Hill and Sartin were suspects.
Hargett said when the officers arrived at the home, they witnessed Hill smoking marijuana with his 10-month-old child in the same room.
Hargett said the Lynn officers contacted Russellville investigators, who went to the scene.
“When investigators arrived on the scene, the smell of marijuana in the home was overwhelming,” investigator Lt. Scotty Lowery said. “We recovered a small amount of marijuana, items of drug paraphernalia, and numerous items of stolen jewelry connected to the crime the Lynn police were in the area investigating.”
Lowery said the Franklin County Department of Human Resources removed the child from the home and placed the child in the care of family members.
