Sellars signs with Alabama Southern

Senior Brae Sellars of Tharptown made her future athletic plans known Friday when she signed with Alabama Southern Community College’s softball team.

Sellars plays basketball and softball at Tharptown but decided that softball was the sport she wants to play at the next level.

“Softball is my favorite sport,” Sellars said. “I’m better at it, too.”

Alabama Southern head softball coach Elaine Coven said she was drawn to Sellars for several reasons.

“She has a great attitude and she loves the game,” Coven said. “She is going to be a big help for our team. We have eight sophomores with a big freshman class coming in, and we play about 30 fall games.”

Sellars can play either shortstop or second base, but she prefers second base because she had played at that position “for forever.”

Coven said that Sellars might be able to play at that position if she practices well.

“We will practice her at every position she is comfortable with,” Coven said. “If she works hard enough she can have any position she wants.”

While Sellars said she is ready to start somewhere new, thoughts of home will be with her still.

“I’m nervous about being away from my mama,” Sellars said.

Her mother, and head softball coach, Susie Sellars said that while she is sad to see Brae go, she knows that it is what her daughter wants.

“I’m excited for her,” Susie Sellars said. “It’s something that she has wanted since she was young. She is entering that next phase of her life, but she’s ready. It’s what she wants.”
